Petitgrain Essential Oil
Herbology Petitgrain Essential Oil is 100% pure, therapeutic grade Citrus aurantium (Bitter Orange) leaf and twig oil, steam distilled from the fresh leaves and young twigs of the bitter orange tree, the same botanical source as the celebrated Neroli essential oil (which is distilled from the blossoms) and Bitter Orange peel oil. The name "Petitgrain" derives from the French "petite grain" meaning "little grain," referring to the small, unripe green fruits that were originally included in the distillation alongside the leaves and twigs. Petitgrain is the most affordable and accessible of the three bitter orange essential oils, yet it shares much of the same therapeutic character as the far more expensive Neroli, making it one of the best value premium essential oils available for skin care, hair care, and aromatherapy applications.
Petitgrain Essential Oil's primary active compounds are linalyl acetate (40 to 55%), linalool (20 to 30%), alpha terpineol, and geranyl acetate, a composition that is remarkably similar to Neroli and Clary Sage in its linalyl acetate and linalool dominance, delivering the same documented antispasmodic, anxiolytic, antimicrobial, and sebum regulating properties in a more accessible and affordable format. Linalyl acetate's antispasmodic and anxiolytic action provides genuine muscle relaxing and anxiety reducing effects in massage and aromatherapy applications. Linalool's anti inflammatory and antimicrobial properties support skin clarity, scalp health, and a more balanced complexion. Alpha terpineol contributes additional antimicrobial and antioxidant action. Geranyl acetate adds a subtle floral, rosy dimension to the aroma profile. On skin, its sebum regulating action makes it particularly effective for oily, combination, and acne prone skin. On the scalp, its antimicrobial and sebum regulating properties support a balanced, healthy scalp environment. In aromatherapy, its fresh, woody, slightly floral citrus aroma is uplifting, clarifying, and deeply calming, with documented anxiolytic effects that make it one of the most effective and affordable natural oils for stress relief and emotional balance.

How to Use
- Face (oily and acne prone skin): Add 2 to 3 drops to 30ml of carrier oil (jojoba or grapeseed) and apply to clean skin morning or night. Particularly effective for sebum regulation and balancing oily zones and congested pores.
- Scalp treatment: Add 3 to 5 drops to 30ml of carrier oil and massage into scalp. Leave for 20 to 30 minutes before washing out. Use 2 to 3 times per week for oily scalp balance and antimicrobial support.
- Aromatherapy (stress relief and relaxation): Add 5 to 8 drops to a diffuser for a fresh, uplifting, and calming atmosphere. Ideal for stress relief, focus, and emotional balance. Pairs beautifully with bergamot, lavender, and ylang ylang for a classic fresh floral relaxation blend.
- Relaxing massage: Add 5 to 8 drops to 30ml of carrier oil for a calming, muscle relaxing massage experience.
- Natural perfume: Use as a fresh, woody citrus middle note in natural perfume formulations. Pairs magnificently with neroli, bergamot, and sandalwood for a classic fresh citrus floral oriental fragrance profile.
- DIY formulations: Add at 1 to 2% concentration to skin care and hair care formulations for sebum regulating, antimicrobial, and aromatic benefits. An excellent and more affordable alternative to neroli in premium skin care formulations.
- Tip: Petitgrain is the insider's choice among aromatherapists and natural perfumers who want the therapeutic and aromatic character of Neroli at a fraction of the price. Blending Petitgrain with a small amount of Neroli (80% Petitgrain to 20% Neroli) creates a blend that is virtually indistinguishable from pure Neroli in both aroma and therapeutic effect, at a significantly lower cost.
- Important: Always dilute before skin application (1 to 2% in carrier oil). Perform a patch test before first use. Avoid during pregnancy. Do not ingest. Keep away from children.
